Provides research-based instructional practices, including different variations of the cooperative learning strategy that can be used to enhance student learning and classroom instruction. Both collaborative and cooperative learning use small groups that work together to achieve a common goal. These groups achieve the objective by breaking it down into small tasks. According to Borich (2007), “task structures have the goal of dividing and specializing the efforts of small groups of individuals across a larger task whose outcome depends on the sharing, cooperation, and collaboration of individuals within groups.” Groups are expected to work as a team to accomplish a given task.

Collaborative or cooperative learning is important when you are trying to teach students real life learning skills. According to Borich (2007), “Cooperative learning is important in helping learners acquire from the curriculum the basic cooperative attitudes and values they need to think independently inside and outside of [a] classroom”. The attitudes he is referring to include critical thinking, independent thinking, problem solving skills and of course reasoning. Using a cooperative learning group in itself is an important variable that supports the strategy’s success.

If a cooperative or collaborative learning structure is structured in the correct manner, students should be able to control their learning experience from the beginning until the end. The teacher is only present as a guide. However, the teacher had the job of first creating the lesson plan in the first place to teach those students the desired objectives.
