About a few days ago, Facebook revealed its new upcoming technology, the Facebook Home. This is not just a typical android phone, however. It has a catch- Facebook would be on the phone’s lock screen and home screen every time they check their phone. As you all know, Facebook is the world’s largest social networking site. By the end of 2012, there were more than a billion active users! The amount of social network users has increased drastically. It started off as a way to communicate behind a screen, but has become so big and popular that it even influences our education. Today, I will talk to you about how social media is taking over the world. It is not only the easiest way for teens to communicate with their friends and peers, but it can also be very distracting and lead to problems in studying and education once you are addicted to these social networking sites.

You may wonder how social media came to be since it is everywhere in our daily lives. Well, it came in at the same time as people started to spend more time connecting to one another, especially with distant friends and relatives. People would start to use email or text to reach others. Social media filled the need for people to be able to communicate with anyone, whenever and wherever. As technology keeps on advancing, there will be better ways for people to talk to others.

With social media and social networks, there are positive sides. Dr. Larry Rosen, a professor and past chair of the Psychology Department as California State University, told me in an interview that many teens use social media to find out about homework or upcoming quizzes or tests. It was the fast and easiest way to reach their teachers or peers. Not only did it help with school related work, but teens could maintain close relationships with friends on these sites.
