Prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird

The novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a social drama about racism in Southern United States in the 1930s. The setting of this story is in a small town called Maycomb County in Alabama, USA. The point of view of the novel is first person, because Scout Finch narrates everything in first person and her thoughts and assessments of the experiences argument the novel. This novel tells the story about a colored man called Tom Robinson that is falsely accused of raping a white woman. The lawyer who defends him, Atticus Finch, has to decide between what is morally right and the pressure the society imposes on him, in other words, racism. He has to stand up for what is right. Along the story, Harper Lee expresses the prejudgment, discrimination and racism present in the Southern parts of USA against people who were different, where colored people didn’t have any rights, so the white people treated them in a very bad way.

The social drama, the context and the worldview are related to each other in this novel. The social drama is a literary genre that covers topics related to conflicts and problems between certain characters or communities. The context of this story is the Great Depression era in United States in the 1930s, where people were still very racist and close-minded. The worldview is the point of view of a character according to the society they live in, the context and their moral formation. These notions or concepts are related to each other because of the fact that according to the historical, economic, political and/or social contexts, the worldview of the characters and the social drama genre is given, because the context is what influences the characters to think and act in a certain way, and according to the actions that the characters make, conflicts are created and eventually makes the story a Social Drama.
