Chapter 1

People get engaged in argument everyday and arguemnet are issues that invite differing opinions and are subject to debate. For instance, should the internet be censord or shold gays be allowed to marry.In debates there are no clear position to take though the decision we make in regard to them can hugely affect our life. In democratic societies people are supposed to vote and give their own opinions or perspectives in regard to issues. They serve on a jury to protest, assent .. about a policy. Therefore it’s highly important to know how to evaluate an argument and hoe to formulate one.

While arguing it’s important to keep listening in your attempt to resolve an issue or find a compromise. Without arguments our societies become stagnant or dull. Arguments can be written, sung, spoken, or observed in a picture, they can be explicit or implicit, and few issues are black or white or have pros and cons.

Arguers can be lawyers arguing whether the defendant is guilty or not guilty, legislators arguing in favor of new legislations, students and professor trying to establish a solution to puzzling questions etc. However, there will always be multiple perspectives and a need to reach a compromise or agreement. Hence an argument tent to “to bring about a change in an audience’s initial position on a controversial issue..” this happens if the arguer present a claim , reasons and evidences so that the audience agree with the position taken. An arguer may also create the possibility of a consensus agreement by acknowledging different points of view ( identify one view that is acceptable to most members of the audience).
