Twain, Mark, John C. Gerber, and Paul Baender. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Berkeley:

University of California, 1982. Print.

Setting:

-  Fictional town of St. Petersburg, Missouri on the Mississippi – time period between the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.

Summary of Characters:

In The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Tom Sawyer, as the protagonist of the book, represents the freedom and innocence of boyhood. He is a very manipulative person who is the obvious leader of his “gang” of boys in the town. One example of this is when Tom persuades that painting a fence with white paint is very fun, and persuades all the boys of the town to paint his fence, while he kicks back and enjoys. He lives with his Aunt, Polly. Aunt Polly owns a black slave named Jim. Another important character is Huckleberry Finn. He is one of Tom’s friends, and orphan boy who lives on the outskirts of middle class society who is the son of the town drunkard. Tom and Huck start off “licking” (fighting) each other, but they become the best of friends. Also a good friend of Tom’s is Joe Harper. Becky Thatcher is equally important; as she is a classmate of Tom’s who is new to St. Petersburg. Tom develops a crush on Becky and saves her from the dangers of McDougall’s cave, and “marries” her; he tells her he will only love her and vice versa. Oh kids. Injun Joe is the antagonist of the novel. He is half Native American, a drunkard and a murderer.
