Write an essay of approximately 500 words describing how your chosen profession (either the one you currently follow or the one for which you are studying) has responded to the changing world of information technology in the recent past, and how it is likely to change in the next two or three years.

With the changing world of information technology my profession as a automotive technician at a General Motors Dealership has evolved. In the early 1900s when Henry Ford first started production of his historic Model T automobiles were very basic. You had a hand cranked engine, transmission, drivetrain, suspension, and wheels that was it. There was no such thing as a remote starter, voice activated turn by turn navigation, or Bluetooth technology. Within recent years innovative technological developments have produced some of the most amazing vehicle features and new ways technicians educate themselves.

With the ongoing economic crisis we live in today and the constant fighting for fossil fuels the age of fuel-efficient vehicles are becoming more pertinent. In 2005 GM engineers designed an engine that utilizes a new technology called Displacement on Demand (DOD). DOD allows a V6 or V8 engine to not use half of the cylinders under light-load conditions to improve fuel economy. Estimated performance on EPA tests show a 5.5%-7.5% improvement in fuel economy. Starting in 2006 GM made a huge push using E85 fuel. It consists of 85 percent ethanol alcohol and 15 percent gas, which they call flex-fuel. With increasing fuel costs GM designed the flex-fuel models with the intentions of saving the consumer money by increasing their Miles Per Gallon (MPG). Also, it uses 85 percent less imported petroleum. The only cons were that the environmental benefits were unclear and ethanol being developed from grains particularly corn could possibly affect are global food supply.
