When we talk about languages in this country everyone thinks of English and Spanish, but let us see what languages we really speak. If you take a look though I think that you will find that English and Spanish only scratch the surface of the languages in this country. Remember that we are a melting pot, founded on immigrants from all over the world moving her bringing their cultures, customs and languages here with them. They have not just cast off the traditional tongue of their ancestors, they may speak it less and less each generation but it is there and it is important. Languages like customs are what have made this country what it is today, if you think about the English that we speak here in the United States and compare it to the English that is spoken in England you will see a vast difference not only in the words but the meaning also. The languages that people have brought with them have filtered into what I call American English.

At this point there is no constitutional amendment that states English is the official language of the United States, with the swearing in of the 112th congress that could change. According to the U.S. English Inc. HR 997 is in front of the congress. This bill would make English the official U.S. Language and reduce the use of multilingualism and have government agencies focus on promoting English first. So while English is spoken by most of the United States, and it is considered the unofficial language of this country we as of yet do not have an official country language. Out of the 50 states that make up this country 27 states have established English as the official state language, with Hawaii having both English and Hawaiian as the official state languages.
