Vietnamese has difference beauty and difference fashion with others in the world. In Simon Ingram article, “Vietnam: West is best for beauty”, BBC News, 1999. He asserts that Vietnamese change the traditional notions about beauty and fashion and they follow West. My essay will response with three of his main points.

Firstly, Ingram (1999) says that models on the catwalks of Saigon look serious and “It is the beauty icons of the Western world that set the standards”. The author is not right because the style of models when they perform is seriousness. From past to now, it is the rule of models over the world, not just Western.

In the second point, he has a mistake when asserts that “West is best”. It is over generalization. In his article, he always praises West but it is just his opinion. Besides that, he comments that the shops in Vietnam have many imported cosmetics. It seems that Vietnam changes and depends on West a lot. Moreover, the author is man so he can not know clearly and exactly about cosmetics for women. Many women use cosmetics to make their skin clean and clear. They do not use cosmetics to make their skin become white which makes them looks like Western. The air in Vietnam is not fresh so they use hat and long glove to protect their skin and health.

In his final point, it is about plastic surgeons. He asserts that Vietnamese women want to change some organs to make them look like Western and they feel comfortable to live with new organs. It is not true. Firstly, technology of plastic surgeons in Vietnam is not perfect so they will not have beauty of Western completely. Furthermore, Vietnamese do not like plastic surgeons so many women feel confident with their nature beauty. Finally, Vietnam had a difficult decade on the war and its sequels are serious. So some people want to replace their organs to make their life better.
