The course of Principles of Building 2 deals with key topics in environmental design and analysis, lectures that looked at the historical relationship between climate and architecture, environmental comfort and their application in design; passive control design in architecture such as daylighting, thermal comfort involving heating and cooling strategies, renewable energies, material’s life cycle and energy consumption in buildings and communities.

In the EA project you will be asked to research these key factors from the viewpoint of Chinese vernacular buildings, beginning at Wuzhen’s Ancient Water Town and Tianzifang in comparison with the institute buildings designed by master-architect Wang Shu’s “Xiangshan Campus, China Academy of Art” and Neri & Hu’s “Waterhouse”. This is going to be a group project and each group will demonstrate your research findings and analysis through diagrams, using graphics software and image-editing tools such as the ones you already learnt in the Architectural Visualization module.

Project Details: Each group should identify at least two environmental-related aspects as suggested in the following topics. Based on the field trip, select one vernacular building and one contemporary building for comparisons/ diagrammatic analysis in the format of A2-size layout (minimum 4 sheets).
