Abstract

This purpose of this paper is to explore the ways in which strategic planning and the strategic planning process is used in today’s organizations. It also attempts to provide a general understanding of how executive coaching can improve an executive’s ability to lead the strategy process. The paper provides some definitions of strategy, strategic thinking, strategic management, strategic formulation, strategic planning, and strategic implementation. It also offers a brief history of strategic planning and describes the current issues surrounding strategic planning. The paper concludes with a list of critical success factors should be considered in the strategic planning processes for organizations to successfully develop and implement strategies in today’s complex environment. Using secondary research, a review of the literature was performed and the information gathered came from a number of sources including Mintzberg, Grunig & Kuhn, Pietersen and Quinn.
