Evolution

The video gaming industry started in 1972 when Magnavox released Odyssey, a console consisting of 12 games, including tennis and ping pong. Odyssey was a relative failure due to a weak marketing campaign and distribution problems. After Magnavox’s failures to create a video gaming industry, Nolan Bushnell founded a company named Atari which released an arcade console in 1972. With limited success Atari dabbled with a few more products until its release of a cartridge fed system in 1977. By 1982 over 15 million Atari systems had sold, and Bushnell cornered an 80% market share on the industry. In 1983 Nintendo entered the industry with intellectually protected chip-based game controls. The chips forced regulated licensing with third party game developers, allowing Nintendo great control on the game released for its console. Nintendo held a majority market share until 1988, when Sega Genesis released a 16-bit console with a cheaper pricing structure.

The next era of gaming was kicked off in 1994 when Sony released Playstation, a 32-bit, CD-ROM based gaming console. The system took off and Sony commanded a majority of the market share. Sega and Nintendo released new systems in the year’s following Sony’s entrance to the market; they failed to slow down PS’s stranglehold on the market. Sega Dreamcast, the first 128-bit system released, was Sega’s final attempt to steal customers from Sony, but Sony’s brand loyalty and Sega’s production woes dropped Sega out of the console market soon thereafter.

Sony launched a second version of their Playstation line in 1999. Playstation 2 was backwards compatible, allowing PS1 owners to play old games on PS2. Nintendo jumped into the next era of gaming with Game Cube in 2001, but like previous systems it failed to make a splash in the industry.
