The effects of different caffeine concentrations on wheat seeds

INTRODUCTION

In this report you will find out the rates by which wheat seeds can germinate from applying different concentrations of caffeine in which it is mixed with water. Caffeine is a powdery substance that is derived from plants. The significant purpose of plants producing caffeine is to kill some insects that potentially threaten the existence of the plant itself. After caffeine is obtained from plants, it is then used in coffee or to enhance soft drinks such as soda or energy drinks. In some cases, we as humans depend on caffeine to get through the day in a sufficient manner. In other words caffeine is an addictive substance in human nature. In contrast, the main question here is how will this substance effect seeds from germinating.

Germination is the beginning stage The main purpose of this experiment is to see the positive or negative effects that caffeine has on the germination process of seeds. Since caffeine acts as a pesticide, my group and I came up with the prediction that if caffeine is placed directly on the seed, it will have a negative effect on the growth rate of seeds. In order to be precise in this hypothesis, we must follow directly from the scientific method.

METHODS

The scientific method gave us the skills to be patient and observe nature take its course. Altogether we observed a total of 160 wheat seeds in this experiment. Eight petri dishes with 20 seeds each was watered on a daily basis for a period of 7 days. The concentrations of caffeine was limited to 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0% per pair of dishes. Also, the last pair was a concentration of

0.0% caffeine solution. Our main objective in this experiment is to evaluate the growth rate during this 7 day project using the scientific method. According to the germination process, we have distinguished that
