In sociological terms, roles function as vital course of action for behavior. Transition in the military could be a hard process, but understanding roles and responsibilities will resolves issues of role conflict and ambiguity. Military leader’s expectation of behavior can set the parameters for actions seen as generally suitable within a military community. Most members of the United States military have assumed a number of roles of leadership within their lifetime. At any given time a soldier can assume different and specific leadership roles from work from different leadership levels within the military organization each producing a set of outlook within each level.

Leadership has been a key topic in the military community and as well as organizational psychology for some time (Campbell, 1994). There have been many studies on leadership and management; the meaning and dimensions still remains unclear. While there is some harmony that leadership relates to social manipulation, more divergence concerns the basic magnitude of leader’s performance. Some have argued that there are two tasks to be achieved in groups; the maintenance of the group and performance of some task or activity describing the leader’s behavior within two dimensions. What happens when conflict arises?

Newstrom defines conflict as an interpersonal procedure that arises from dissimilarity over goal achievement. It could be from techniques applied to accomplish goals or from the tone of voice used as people articulate their positions (Newstrom, 2011). What occurs when role conflict affects the work environment? Most role conflicts can occur because of various obligations to various groups. Role conflicts normally transpire within any environment within the military; as an individual’s take on various roles of leadership.
