Specialization of Business Education

Abstract

Specialization has become a growing trend in business education. However, there is little empirical evidence which supports this trend. In an effort to illustrate this point the current research provides a review of specialization versus general education in business preparation. The research concludes with a review of the evidence and support for general studies and traditional approaches for business education.

Should Business Education be Specialized?

For students seeking a degree in business, there are a number of pertinent options which can be considered. Some students may choose to pursue a general education in business with the belief that specialized skills can and should be learned through professional experience. Other students prefer to pursue a specialized degree in business, believing that this type of education will provide them with a competitive edge when seeking employment. Clearly, arguments made on both sides of the debate are valid. However, when making this decision one must choose between specialized education or general education in business. In an effort to provide insight into which educational pathway works best, the current research reviews data regarding business degrees, outcomes for education and opportunities for students that purse these educational challenges. Through a careful review of what has been noted on this subject, it will be possible to answer the question of whether or not business education should be specialized.
