Womens role in Catcher in the Rye

In the Catcher in the Rye, it seems that women at the time were not respected at all. At that time of life, women had rights but they weren’t often respected. This can be shown through this book. Women are often not treated properly by men. However, as always, there are some men that treat women with respect, such as Holden does. On the other hand, there are also men like Stradler who simply uses women. He has so many women that he can barely remember their names. At the time, many of the young men didn’t think this was a big deal. This made Holden extremely mad. One major reason that he was so mad was because one of the women that Stradler was seeing was his childhood best friend. Stradler couldn’t even remember her name. Holden had to tell him what her name was.

This book shows how women’s roles in society were back then. It seems that many of the men at that time were successful in getting and finding women. However, when it came to Holden, his experience with women seemed to always become a negative experience for him. At one point of the book, Holden was feeling lonely so he bought a prostitute named Sunny. Even this experience turned sour for him. It ended with Sunny just taking his money and leaving, Holden does get along with some girls. It talks about how he could always relate and talk to his sister Phoebe. He likes talking to her, however, when he leaves, it becomes hard because whenever he calls home his parents answer. When his parents answer the phone, Holden just ends up hanging up the phone. He often wants to call and talk to Phoebe but is scared that his parents will answer. This usually deters him from calling. Holden does end up getting along with the two nuns he meets. He tries to buy them food, and give them money. He does this because he feels bad and guilty. However, during this encounter, they have enough time to discuss many different topics.
