III. Celebrities, brand recognition, and sex appeal are some ways in which we let advertising have an effect on us.
A. Sex appeal is also used substantially in advertising.
IV. There are many ways advertising and media can have an effect on our lives.
Effects of the Media
Media has always been a part of American life. Types of media include newspapers, magazines, radio, advertisement, and television. People often times believe media has an influence on society. Some believe media has an effect on the way we judge ourselves. Also believing media has an effect on the way others judge us. In the article called “but first a word from our sponsor,” James Twitchell uses advertising as an example of how the media has an effect on our lives (Twitchell). Media has an effect on our lives in many ways.
Advertising is a type of media and can have a substantial effect on society. Often, people don’t pay attention to the product they are purchasing and only base their decision off the package and advertising. An example of this may be a consumer shopping only at Lowe’s as oppose to Home Depot because they prefer Lowe’s sponsored Nascar driver when Home Depot may actually carry a better and cheaper product. There are millions of dollars put into advertising to defer people to buy their products based on the advertising as oppose to the product. According to an article named, “Lowe's Put’s Its Focus on Knowing the Customer's Wants” by the New York Times website; Lowes alone spent Seven Hundred and Eighty-Nine dollars on advertising in 2008(Elliott). We as consumers tend to fall for these advertisements and let media effect our decisions, choices, and the...
