In today’s world our society are so diversified, fill with so many cultures that the social services field have to be more prepare to facilitate and welcome such diversity when it comes to providing services. Social workers can improve their workplace by increasing their knowledge of different cultures. Increase and embrace cultural differences can be helpful for workers so they can fully be equipped to engage with families, helping to better understand family and make decisions that are culturally appropriate. This paper would discuss what makes an agency culturally competent; what might you as a human services worker do to make your agency user-friendly? And how might you address a practice within your current or future organization that reflects subtle discrimination?
An agency can become culturally competent by acquiring knowledge and skills, building trusting relationships with families, communities and consumers, being mindful and respectful, develop support for change within the organization, identify barriers and resources. Individuals, families and communities can help build cultural competency by advocating for themselves and the communities although the organization has the ability to incorporate various behaviors, policies and attitudes that can work effectively in a cross cultural settings to get a better outcome. Cultural competence acknowledges and validates who people are and it is non-threatening, today as the social and economic environment growing faster than in the past many organizations are beginning to understanding the need for cultural competence. With the increase of immigrants and people of color, the workforce are becoming very diversified hence is the reason the need for agencies and other organizations to become cultural competent as they would be able to benefit by increasing respect and mutual understanding, new creativity in problem...
