Art of the Moving Image

Guidelines for the final assignment

Write a substantial analytical essay (approximately 1500-2000 words, typed, double-spaced, spell-checked). In this assignment, you are expected to analyze a moving image media work in relation to some of the concepts discussed in class. That is, you are to analyze these aspects of the example you select:

▪ narrative/non-narrative form

▪ mise-en-scene

▪ cinematography

▪ editing

▪ sound

As you prepare your written analysis, it is likely that you'll discover that it's logical to emphasize some of these aspects of your example more than others. That's okay: specific works may have a strong critical reputation based on a perceived distinctiveness in cinematography or editing, etc. However, you must be able to defend the emphases of your discussion. For instance, if you write an essay on Zhang Yimou’s Hero without emphasizing aspects of mise-en-scene, you may have difficulty defending that decision.

As with previous assignments, you can select a film from the “pre-approved” list, or, with your tutorial leader’s approval, you can write about a moving image work not on that list.

Your grade for this assignment will be based on the accuracy and appropriateness of the concepts employed, and on the depth, originality, and thoroughness of your analysis.

One other item: It's getting late in your second semester of university study, the assignments are piling up, and you're feeling a lot of pressure. If you're having trouble organizing your time and work, please please please (please!) consult the course leader and/or your tutorial leader.

DUE DATE: 20 April, 3pm. You may certainly turn in your work before that date. Work submitted after that date is subject to penalty. Please turn in your assignment via Blackboard.

NO EMAIL SUBMISSIONS, PLEASE.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOUR NAME AND STUDENT NUMBER ARE ON YOUR ESSAY, AND PLEASE ALSO INCLUDE THE NAME OF YOUR TUTORIAL LEADER...
