William Procter and James Gamble both founded what is known today as Procter and Gamble. These two business men only met as a result of marry two sisters, Olivia and Elizabeth Norris. Originally Procter and Gamble started in 1837 as a small, family ran, soap and candle enterprise with a purpose of providing consumers with ‘products and services of superior quality and value’ (Procter and Gamble, 2009).   This original aim is responsible for making Procter and Gamble what it is today. Procter and Gamble stopped making candles in the 1920’s but soap making is still a major part of Procter and Gamble today.

Procter and Gamble was one of the first companies to conduct market research on its consumers. It was this pioneering move that allows Procter and Gamble to provide exactly what consumers want and anticipate consumer needs.

Co-development with India also allowed Procter and Gamble to develop the brand ‘Crest’ which was a breakthrough in the use of fluoride to prevent tooth decay. This brand development is just one

of nearly 300 brands marketed by Procter and Gamble today.

Today Procter and Gamble is ‘America’s biggest maker of household products’ (Corporate watch 2009), covering categories such as laundry and cleaning, beauty care, feminine care, food and beverages and health care. Some of Procter and Gambles brands include: Head and Shoulders, Ariel, Sunny Delight, Pantene, Pringles, Charmin and Old Spice. Not only does Procter and Gamble make household products it also makes pet food and water filters.

Procter & Gamble is a company with more than 100 years on business, and is a clear example of a successful company. Procter and Gamble was founded in 1837 and incorporated in Ohio on May 5, 1905.
