Leadership style can vary depending on the task trying to be accomplished. You can focus on the task, or focus more on the people. Focusing on the task would exhibit task-orientated behavior, which is a behavior that prioritizes the accomplishment of a task in an efficient and reliable way. If someone is more task-orientated than relationship-orientated they are concerned with group goals and the means to achieve the goals. There are three dimensions that make up task-orientated behavior; short term planning, clarifying roles and objectives, and monitoring operations and performance. Relationship-orientated people are more concerned of the interpersonal relationships, value of the workers, and have a strong commitment to the workplace. Dimensions that make up relationship-orientated behaviors are supporting subordinates, developing subordinates, and recognizing work. In the workplace I would have to consider myself more of a task-orientated leader. I have and act on several qualities of both types of behaviors, though. At my workplace, Hair Saloon for Men, we have goals we are “required” to meet every month. If you meet your goals, your pay raises by different small percentages for the pay period. I always know how close to my goal I am. We have different service categories such as the classic, jr men’s, father/son specials, premiums, neck shaves, executive, stress relief and camo color applcations. This year I have exceeded each goal, each month. Management looks at our numbers frequently. There are times when I show more of my relationship-orientated skills at work. I help encourage others to meet their goals and always try to include people in activities happening outside of work or helping to volunteer a different position when needed. I am closest to my manager, assistant manager, and one of the receptionist the most. We do encounter drama quite often, and as a forgiving person I am always trying to find the middle ground.
