SWOT Analysis

Strengths:

Ford is one of the largest automobile manufacturers in the world

Ford offers financing directly to consumers

Ford has a far reaching supply network which increases their market coverage

Ford has a large diversity of product lines to choose from

Ford Asia, Africa and Ford Mazda were strong in 2005 with an increase of 18.5% in sales from 2004(Brainmass.com)

Weaknesses:

Because of recent recalls Ford’s brand name has suffered

The profitable financial services department has large underfunded pensions and other financial obligations (Brainmass.com)

In North America Ford’s truck sales are down due to competition from lighter more gas efficient models made by Japanese companies

Opportunities:

Ford has turned toward new lines of cars with hybrid engines

The growing markets for Asia, Africa, and Ford Mazda could be areas to build on in the future

Possibly more scaling back on manufacturing in some areas to fit demand, making costs go down

Threats:

Continually rising oil prices

Growing competition of other car manufacturers

Rising cost of materials, transportation costs, and overhead

Present and Future Target Market for Ford

The motto for is “Ford: Drive One.” This theme basically tells who their target market is. Ford Motor Company tries to target everyone. Each year they try to come out with an automobile that will appeal to all age groups, ethnic backgrounds, and social class. Such vehicles range from the Mustang that is targeted to a younger age group to the F-150 that is aimed at the Blue collar working man. At the present time they are trying to position themselves to become the leaders of hybrids in the American market. The target income is $30,000 – $100,00, and the target age range is 18-50.
