Unit 13 Lecture Study Guide – Nervous System Part II

1. What are the 2 major divisions of the Nervous System? Central and Peripheral Nervous systems are the two divisions.

2. What are the 2 major divisions of the central nervous system (CNS)? Brain or spinal cord are the two divisions.

3. What are the 2 major divisions of the peripheral nervous system (PNS)? Nerves connecting CNS to muscles and organs.

4. Differentiate between the autonomic and somatic nervous systems. Autonomic nervous systems are involuntary and the somatic nervous systems are voluntary.

5. List the 3 types of neurons found in the PNS and their function. The three neurons are sensory, motor and interneurons.

6. Differentiate between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. Be sure to include at least 3 examples of responses controlled by each. The sympathetic nervous system is the "fight or flight response" and the parasympathetic nervous system is "rest and digest." Three examples of sympathetic is: release adrenaline, increase heart rate, increase blood flow to muscles. Three examples of parasympathetic is: calms the body, maintains energy control, lowers heart rate.

7. What is lateralization and how are body functions affected by it? Lateralization is when two sides of the body are separated. The central nervous system is affected because the left and right sides of the brain perform different functions.

8. Describe the principle of contralateral organization. The principle of contralateral organization is that sensory data crosses over in pathways leading to cortex.

9. List the 4 lobes of each hemisphere and its basic functions. The lobes of the brain are frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal. The left hemisphere functions in language, and the right hemisphere functions in math and music.

10. What is the corpus callosum? What happens if it is cut? The corpus callosum is a major pathway between divisions. If it is cut, you will have the right...
