Electronic Commerce

Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce or ecommerce, is the online transaction of business, which consisting of buying and selling products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks. The amount of trade conducted electronically has grown extraordinarily since the spread of the Internet. A large percentage of electronic commerce is conducted entirely electronically including virtual storefronts on web sites with online catalogs, airline reservations, online book store, online banking including the electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, inventory management systems, automated data collection systems and online gaming. The nine major e-commerce business models are:

* Business to Business (B2B) e-commerce- businesses selling products and services to other businesses. For example, Gates Rubber Company selling hoses and belts to Ford motor company.

* Business to Consumers (B2C) e-commerce- businesses selling products and services to individual consumers. For example, www.Amazon.com

* Consumers to Business (C2B) e-commerce- Individuals selling products and services to businesses. For example, www.fotolia.com

* Consumers to Consumers (C2C) e-commerce- Individuals selling products and services to other individuals. For example, www.craigslist.com

* Business to Government (B2G) e-commerce- businesses selling products and services to a government entity. For example, Lockheed Martin sells tactical aircraft, satellites to U.S. federal government.

* Consumer to Government (C2G) e-commerce- individuals selling products and services to a government entity. For example, www.ccr.gov
