Industry Paper – Home Gaming Console

Introduction

Home Gaming Console began in 1972, with Magnavox releasing the Odyssey. [1.1] Atari released the home version of Pong in 1975 [1.2] while Nintendo released the Color TV-Game series of consoles in 1977 [1.3].

The North American video game crash in 1983 resulted in Atari having financial difficulties [1.4] and Magnavox abandoned the video game business entirely. The industry was only revitalized by Nintendo Family Computer when it was released in 1983 (released in North America in 1985 as the more commonly known Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES). [1.5]

Today, the existing players are Nintendo, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI). and Microsoft, each with their next generation consoles. Nintendo Wii U was released on 8th Nov 2012 [1.6], SCEI PlayStation4 expected to be released in late 2013 [1.7] and Microsoft next-generation Xbox will be revealed on 21st May 2013 [1.8].
