Russia

 

1. UNIVERSALISM versus PLURALISM: “What is more important – rules or relationships?”

Pluralism, relationships are more important in doing business. In Russia people in any situation behave depends on the circumstances. What is right in one situation may not be right in another. The emphasis is on relationships and trust, not on formal rules. Personal contacts, communication, recognition is not an empty pastime.

 

2. INDIVIDUALISM versus COMMUNITARISNISM: “Do we function as a group or as individuals?”

Mostly communitarianism. People feel themselves as a part of a group. Looking at the decision-making process, a communitarian decision takes much longer than an individualist would take. It takes so much time, because there are sustained efforts to win over everyone to achieve consensus. But during the last time there is lots of individualism, culture is changing.

 

3. SPECIFIC versus DIFFUSE: “How far to we get involved?”

Diffuse, people keep their private and working lives not separate. (closely linked). A person is more closed in public space but is very open in private space.

4. AFFECTIVITY versus NEUTRALITY: “Do we display our emotions?”

Mostly affectivity. Russians show their feeling by laughing, smiling, grimacing, scowling and gesturing. They are open people for communication, making friendship.

 

5. INNER DIRECTED versus OUTER DIRECTED: “Do we control our environment or work with it?”

Mostly INNER DIRECTED

Russia is the country where people used to work with environment without control and sometimes it leads to disastrous results. Our territory is rich with natural resources, so we don't care about consequences of using it, so we are not selective and careful with our environment.

 

6. ACHIEVED STATUS versus ASCRIBED STATUS: “Do we have to prove ourselves to receive status or is it given to us?”
