Staffordshire Bull Terrier

* Originated in England

* Before the 19th century, bloodsports such as bull baiting, bear baiting and cock fighting were common.

* Bulls brought to market were set upon by dogs as a way of tenderizing the meat and providing entertainment for the spectators; and dog fights with bears, bulls and other animals were often organized as entertainment for both royalty and commoners.

* Bloodsports were eliminated in 1835 but dog fighting continued

* Known for its character of intelligence, fearlessness and loyalty, affection for friends, off-duty quietness and trustworthy stability

* Known to suffer from Hereditary Cataracts and L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (a metabolic disorder resulting in behavioural changes and dementia-like symptoms

* Median lifespan is 12.75 years

* They possess tremendous stamina and must have plenty of exercise

* Should be brushed every day

American Bull Terrier

* Origin:

* First bred in the nineteenth century in the English region of Staffordshire

* Early ancestors of this breed came from England where the Bulldog was bred in England for the purpose of baiting bulls

* Bulldogs pictured as late as 1870 resemble contemporary American Staffordshire Terriers to a greater degree than present-day Bulldogs

* Some writers contend that it was the White English Terrier, Fox Terrier, or the Black and Tan Terrier that was crossed with the Bulldog

* They began to find their way to America as early as 1870 where they became known as the Pit Dog and Pit Bull Terrier, then the American Bull Terrier, and still later as the Yankee Terrier

* After dog fighting was banned in the US in 1900, two strains were developed, a show strain and a fighting dog strain. The show strain was labelled the American Staffordshire, while the fighting dog strain was labelled the American Pit Bull Terrier. The two are now being recognized as separate breeds....
