Part 1.

The Chinese room argument is a thought experiment by John Searle. This is an argument showing objection to the possibility of the real artifical intelligence. The argument is about a man who only knows english stays alone in the room and follow the book with english instructions for manipulating strings of Chinese characters. If there is a chinese customer outside and using chinese symbols to communicate with the man inside, it appears as if someone understands chinses in the room. The argument want to show us that programmed computers may also appear to translate language but they do not really understand that language at all. Even the computer can give feedback but they do not know the meaning. The computer is not actually thinking and it do not have intentional mental states at all The Chinese room argument is a negative prove of Artificial Intelligence. John Searle does not support the physicalism and think that computer is never the same with human even they are doing the same thing. (169 words)

Part 2.

After reading this passage, I still support the Chinese room argument because I am a supporter of dualsm. I believe that there is a soul in everybody’s mind. You can make the artifical intelligence very similar to human being but they are never the same in my mind. I don’t think the human brain is only a kind of functionalism.

The scientists can never produce artifical intelligence exactly equal to a human. It is possible that a very clever person might finally realise that the programme does language because human being contains uncertainity. More than that, In the process of read through the programme and find out different symbols meaning and understand chinese. It is definitely a learning process. For computer, you can insert the new progrmme to a computer for computations. However, I cannot immagine a computer system learning on their own. This is totally an impossible situation.

Other than that, some people may argue that they can...
