About TAG and Impact of Thalassemia

Thalassemia Awareness Group (TAG) has started its journey with the slogan- “No More Thalassemia”. TAG’s vision is to save the future generation from having this disease and reduce the number of Thalassemia patients in Bangladesh. With the vision in mind, we are planning to organize awareness programs among the young people of our society, which aims to spread awareness among the new generation about the disease and its severe impact on the patients’ physical, psychological and social wellbeing.

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder, which results in severe anemia. It is an inherited blood disorder characterized by abnormally less hemoglobin and fewer red blood cells in the body. Regular blood transfusion is the only treatment to this disease; otherwise the loss of hemoglobin in blood will lead the Thalassemia patient to Death within the first decade of his/her life! But the regular transfusion of blood causes iron overload in the body and patient would die within second or third decade of his/her life. Treatment for patients with Thalassemia Major includes chronic blood transfusion in every two to six weeks; intake of oral pills and injections for Iron Chelation, which is a process through which excess iron is removed from the patient’s body. Only bone marrow transplant can cure the disease which is out of reach of our common people. The worst scenario is found when it is seen that Thalassemia works as an energizer to many diseases such as Iron overload, bone deformities, enlarged spleen, diabetes, heart problem, liver cirrhosis etc.

If both the parents are ‘Thalassemia CARRIERS’ then children can be Thalassemia PATIENTS, who have to fight with the disease throughout their life. Although Thalassemia cannot be cured by conventional treatment, it can be effectively prevented by stopping marriage between two carriers.
