1900-1910

1900: Robert La Follette pg 580

La Follette was elected governor of Wisconsin in 1900 and is the most renowned state-level reformer and supporter of the progressives. Progressives in Wisconsin were able to get approval of direct primaries, initiatives, and referendums. They were also able to regulate railroads and passed laws to provide compensation for injured laborers. La Follette argued that reform was stimulated through the public rather than through politicians.

1901: Theodore Roosevelt pg 588-89

After McKinley's sudden assassination in 1901, Roosevelt took office as the youngest man to ever be president. He believed that reform was more for protecting American society against more radical changes than for remaking it. Before becoming president, he was a member of the New York legislature, a Dakota Badlands rancher, and a commander of the Rough Riders in Cuba during the Spanish-American War. His platform was the “Square Deal” where he was equal with all groups in America instead of in favor of some.

1901: Platt Amendment: pg 560

Passed by the United States to pressure Cuba into incorporating American rule and terms into the Cuban government and constitution. It gave the United States the right to intervene in Cuban affairs in order to maintain independence, life, and property. It also allowed American naval stations on Cuban territories. Overall, it essentially controlled Cuban foreign policy.

1901: American Medical Association pg 572

Doctors who were considered actual trained professionals organized into an association known as the American Medical Association (AMA). This set stricter standards for qualification to practice medicine, where as before nearly anyone could be a doctor if they wanted to be. It also led to the creation of laws by state governments requiring licensing for all doctors.
