THE INCREDIBLE RAFT

1) The Raft

a. 30 Ton Vessel of thick bamboo canes tied together with ropes, used stones as anchors, with sails made of cotton.

b. This raft was the biggest they’ve seen with a build quality similar to the ships of the Spaniards

c. They found they carried many pieces of Gold and Silver to barter with the party they intended to do business with.

i. The things that caught the attention more than the gold and silver was the Textiles, which came in a variety of colors with designs of people or animals on it

ii. Some even contained emeralds as well as other precious stones.

d. Indians on the raft seemed a lot more civilized according to the author and their language also was better.

iii. They had may tools in cooper for mining and practice many ways of farming “they appear to be well bred people”

2) Bartolome Ruiz

e. Experience and determined pilot

f. Born in Moguer-Andalusia

iv. Town from which many of the sailors that accompanied Columbus came from.

g. Ruiz was with Pizarro when he explored the coast of what’s known now as Ecuador Colombia and Peru.

h. He was one of the famous thirteen

i. From his diary is all the information about his expedition collected

j. The raft Ruiz Captured is believed to be from the Manta Culture

3) Manta culture from the diary of Bartolome Ruiz and from other documents

k. Pottery from this culture in contrast with the rest never declined. Their pottery had many forms of people and animals very well polished.

l. The clothes where the most impressive thing, using the technique of warp and weft, with a very fine thread very hard to do by hand so it was thought they used some mechanical help like a loom

m. The art of weaving appears later after the pottery with the exception of Peru in which they found well preserved clothes...
