Halley, a shy sixteen-year-old, and Scarlett, a more energetic and outgoing sixteen-year-old, have been best friends since Scarlett moved to Lakeview. Halley receives a call at sisterhood camp from Scarlett begging her to come home because Michael Sherwood, a popular and charming boy, has died. Scarlett and Michael had been secretly dating and had been madly in love all summer long. Though they both know their junior year of high school will be faced with challenges, Halley and Scarlett head back to school.
Soon into the school year, Scarlett finds out that she is pregnant. Her single parent mom pressures her into getting an abortion, but Scarlett realizes this is the only part of Michael left. At this same time, Halley begins to fall for bad boy Macon Faulkner. She begins sneaking out at night and skipping school. Her physiatrist mom, whom she used to share everything with, finds out she is dating Macon and demands she breaks up with him. Halley lies and tells her mother that they broke up, but still hangs out with Macon. Halley begins to immerge from a girl who told her mom everything to someone who barely talks with her mom. With her best friend pregnant, her new boyfriend begging her to go farther and farther physically and a confused mom who wants her daughter back, Halley’s life is very complicated.
Soon, Halley and Macon begin fighting about everything and their relationship goes down hill. The whole school hears that Scarlett is pregnant and begins calling her nasty names as she loses most of her friends. But through it all Halley and Scarlett remain best friends, until a major blow up on New Years Eve. Halley goes to Macon’s friend’s house where she proceeds to drink too much and needs to go home.
