Although the state remains the primary political unit in understanding world affairs, recent decades have seen a significant increase in “Supranationalism,” in the form of international organizations to which states have surrendered some degree of sovereign power. The following questions concern international organizations such as the United Nations (U.N.), the European Union (E.U.), and the World Trade Organization (W.T.O.).

1. When the United Nations was founded in 1945, what was the primary objective of the organization? How many member nations does the organization currently have?

the UN is based on the sovereign equality of its members; disputes are to be settled by peaceful means; members are to refrain from the threat or use of force in contravention of the purposes of the UN; each member must assist the organization in any enforcement actions it takes under the Charter; and states that are not members of the organization are required to act in accordance with these principles insofar as it is necessary to maintain international peace and security.

2. The U.N. is the only institution where the world’s countries can collectively discuss international political & economic concerns, & attempt peacefully to resolve their differences. In what ways, however, is the power & authority of the U.N. severely limited in enforcing those agreements? Unlike the General Assembly, it was given power to enforce measures and was organized as a compact executive organ. Also unlike the assembly, the Security Council in theory functions continuously at the seat of the UN. In two situations, however, those of recommending applicants for UN membership and of approving proposed amendments to the charter, the actual concurrence of all permanent members has been required.
