Diabetes

I was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the young age of fifteen; I have struggled with the different obstacles such as weight management, healthy eating, and insulin dependence. The incidence and study of diabetes is increasing around the world. Available information has helped to begin to educate the population, however many cases go undiagnosed until the symptoms worsen and affect a patient’s ability to function. The course of the disease is progressive and is a result of a lifestyle that is high in calories and stress and low in activity. I was beginning to exhibit signs of diabetes. This resarchwill give a brief summary of the incidence of diabetes.

Diabetes is considered the epidemic disease in today's society. The statistics show that more than 19 million Americans are diabetic (Norris, Kansagara, Bougatsos, & Fu, 2010). This disease is evolving into one that is not only in favor of the adult population, but now is increasing in children and adolescents. Americans are not the only sufferers of this disease. There is an increase in incidence all over the world.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that is developing as a result of high calorie, high sugar diets and lack of exercise. As the imbalance of general health grows, so does the need for increased awareness. Studies show that diabetes can begin to affect metabolism and predisposition as early as the fetal stage. Maternal health affects the unborn baby and can affect the body's process of using insulin from the beginning of life. This has made the population of children at higher risk for improper tolerance of glucose (Zeck & McIntyre, 2012). Another disadvantage to children is the popularity of fast food. The influence of parental diet and lack of interest in exercise has proven to compound the problem for the next generation.
