Try to answer the questions in the case study and be sure to check the correct answers!  However you will not need to submit your answers to these questions, only the questions on the worksheet ( see below).

Submit your answers as a word document to the Week 4 dropbox

1. Define a reflex and list the components of a reflex arc.

A reflex arc is the nerve pathway for the impulse that causes a reflex action. For example when someone touches the stove they quickly take the hand away from the stove. The reflex arc has 5 essential components they are the following: 1. Receptor 2. Sensory Neuron 3. Integration Center 4. Motor Neuron 5. Effector |

2. Describe the events of an action potential.

The events that take place in an action potential are that sodium ions diffuse. The membrane losses its negative charge and becomes neutral. Then it allows potassium to enter through as they the positive ions diffuse. Since the positive ions entered the membrane now the inside of the membrane becomes negatively charged once more. |

3. What is presbyopia?

Presbyopia is the loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye, it often occurs in the middle and old age. This means that the eye can’t fix its size in order to see far away. Individuals with this have problems seeing from distances. |

Myopia is a vision condition in which close objects are seen clearly, the problem is objects that are farther away appear blurry. Hyperopia is also a vision condition, but it is backwards from myopia. In this case, objects that are farther usually seem clear and those objects that are closer to the individual seem to be blurry and the eye can’t come to focus on the object immediately. |
