Shirley Jones was raised in Pennsylvania, where her parents ran the Jones Brewery, founded by her grandfather that still produces Stoney's Beer till this day. She was named after the tasty drink of a Shirley Temple. Growing up she was in the church choir and shortly after began taking piano lessons. Jones piano teacher recognized her singing abilities and urged her to take it seriously. Which she did, she started to take professional singing lessons and performed in school plays. Even wining Miss Pittsburgh the same year she graduated High School. Upon graduation Shirley moved to the Big Apple in hopes to procure her dreams.

Going to New York City, Shirleys parents gave her $160 and after the money ran out she was suppose to return home. However she had other passions and dreams. She ended up going out for Broadway and landing her first role in South Pacific as a choir singer. Upon this she started landing other roles in Broadway and was becoming every successful. While playing a role in Elmer Gantry she met Jack Cassidy who she soon became married to. In the 1970s Shirley co stared in the Partridge Family along with David who happened to be Jack Cassidys son. This incident is what supposedly led to Cassidy to begin drinking and became an alcoholic. This made Shirley file for divorce.

A couple years after divorce Shirley remarried to a comedian Marty Ingels. Upon her marriage The National Enquire posted a headline stating "Husband's bizarre behavior driving Shirley Jones to drink". Also known as the Enquire it’s a gossip magazine, and information read should be taken in certain perspectives. With false information Jones took the case to court. It was defamation of character which is often used to describe accusations of slander, libel or both. Slander involves verbal derogatory statements, while libel involves written ones.
