Focus on the type of website you want to build for clients. For example, a large e-commerce site requires complex back-end programming architectures and a different type of programming language than building blogs for clients needing social media advertising. Choose the type of sites you enjoy building and make a list of the types of business that use those sites. Outline your business plan based on this target market list and type of site you will focus your efforts on building.

Bring your skills in these areas of programming up to speed using online tutorials, books, workshops or classes at the local college or university. Technology for web sites changes rapidly and the programming skills you might have gained five years ago in school are completely outdated. If the programming side is not your strength, visit your local college's programming and website design program and speak with the professor about his most successful students. They may become your interns and future employees.

Build several websites targeting your ideal client. Approach local businesses, friends or colleagues that may have website needs and ask them if you can build them a site for free or barter services. Building your portfolio is essential to landing new and paying clients.
4
Create your own portfolio website once you have several sites built and populate your site with work examples, backgrounds of yourself and your programmers including their collective experience, the type of web services you provide, contact information and a little personal information about yourself and why you launched your business. (see reference 1) If writing is not your strength, hire a copy writer for this phase. Your ad copy is just as important as your portfolio for landing new business.
