Tim Aston was an excited new project manager with a certain twinkle to his eyes to become the best project manager his company ever had. Sadly, the twinkle began to fade and he began to question his if the title he earned as worth all the effort. He found himself faced with some challenges.

The Reluctant Workers

Tim, a once excited new project manager, found himself faced with obstacles when trying to get a job done. After a meeting with Phil Davies, director of project management, the challenges Tim was facing became evident.

The initial obstacle became evident since Tim lacked leadership skills. Project managers must have leadership skills in order to effectively perform their roles in the company. A prerequisite for program success is the project manager’s ability to lead the team within a relatively unstructured environment. It consist of effectively dealing with managers and providing support to personnel, integrate individual demands, requirements and limitations into decisions and to resolve intergroup conflicts. (Kerzner, 2009, pg. 150) Tim was unable to resolve issues when confronted with them. Ideally, Tim should have established his leadership by having a meeting with his staff when he first arrived to establish expectations and his authority.

If Tim would have established his authority and set expectations for his team he would not have any issue with conflict resolution. Conflict resolution a skill Tim evidently did not possess. Understanding the factors which influence a conflict is important to project manager’s ability to deal and eventual resolve the conflict. When conflict gets out of hand for lack of resolution skills there can be delays in the project, disruption to entire team efforts, and overall gives negative influences to program performance. It would be beneficial for Tim to become familiar with the company dynamic, taking into consideration the seasoned employees feel as though they are more important than any project.
