Educational Placements

Let us take a look at three different but similar areas of educational placements for students with disabilities. Each follows the Inclusion principal in varying ways. “Inclusion is based on IDEA’s principle of the least restrictive environment.” (Turnbull, Turnbull, & Wehmeyer, 2013, p. xx-xx)

The three types of Educational Placement for students with learning disabilities that we will be looking at are, placement outside of the public school setting in a private residential setting, placement in a public facility separate from a traditional public school, and placement within the traditional public school with additional educational recourses provided separately during the day.

First let use look at Educational Services that can be provided with in the traditional public school yet separate from the traditional “Special education outside the regular classroom for 21% of the day consist of unduplicated number of children and youth with disabilities receiving special education and related services outside the regular class for less than 21% of the school day, p.” (Turnbull, Turnbull, & Wehmeyer, 2013, p. xx-xx)

Special Education Teachers ensure that students “who have mild or moderate disabilities; they ensure that lessons and teaching strategies are modified to meet the students’ needs.” ("Special Education Teachers: Occupational Outlook Handbook : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics", n.d., p. xx-xx)

Children with disabilities would receive the benefit of the integration in to the traditional classroom and the interaction with peer groups and teachers in a standardized environment. They also receive the benefit of having a higher level of assistance through specialized teachers outside of the classroom yet still within their school these teachers can provide a support system to the traditional classroom teacher in order to be able to better understand the curriculum that they are required to learn.
