ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP THAT INFLUENCES GROUP BEHAVIOUR THE NATURE AND IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP Leadership so far has been defined as the principal dynamic force that motivates and coordinates the organization in the accomplishment of its objectives. There are many ways of examining leadership and of considering how leadership works in organizations. Leadership is a social relationship between two or more people in which the leader influences the social knowledge, goal acceptance, and actions of the follower. Leaders do not exist in isolation – they affect others. Leaders affect social knowledge by helping to create a social reality. This reality includes what is known, what a leader and group decide are their facts in the world they experience, and how the leader and members are to relate and interact with each other and with outsiders. Leaders also affect the goal acceptance and actions of followers by helping to create the goals that will be pursued and by ensuring that followers accept goals as legitimate and relevant to themselves. The follower internalizes goal acceptance as the follower accepts the leader’s goals. There is a difference between leadership and managership. Managers are people who do things right and leaders are people who do the right thing. Managers tend to take a goal or organizational procedure as a given and then try to accomplish it in the best way possible. Their focus is on means, or how the work is done more than the ends, or what the goal is. Doing the right thing implies that leaders influence the selection of goals and what will be done more than how it is done. Early research on leader traits tended to get bogged down in the study of a seemingly inexhaustible number of possible traits that helped to predict effective leadership in only certain situations.
