Human Resource Management is not just a new label for old-fashioned personnel practices it has evolved through the years to become an integral part of an organizations. This paper will discuss the definitions and functions of HRM. The basic functions are employment, training and development, compensation/benefits and employee relations function. Also HRM assists in the strategic and comprehensive approach when managing people in the organization.

Human Resource Management (HRM) is the term used to describe formal systems devised for the management of people within an organization. (www.uslegal.com) The terms "Human Resource Management" and "Human Resources" have replaced the term "Personnel Management" as a description of the processes involved in managing people in organizations. The purpose of HRM is to maximize the productivity of an organization by optimizing the effectiveness of its employees. The HRM engages in securing and developing the talents of individual workers, as well as implementing programs that enhance communication and cooperation between those individual workers in order to nurture organizational development.

The Human Resource Management Departments of each organization will vary from business to business. “The areas of HRM can take on numerous characteristics”(DeCenzo, & Robbins, 2007). The size, shape and governing philosophies of the organization will determine the Human Research Management roles. One primary functions of the HRM will be to maximize productivity of an organization, which is accomplished by optimizing the effectiveness of the employees. The organization will accomplished this through the employment, training and development, compensation benefits and employee functions. The HRM will employ several individuals that specialize in the following areas.
