The Federal Role in Health Care
Joe Lott
When determining the amount of funding that should be available for health care in the Illinois we need to consider what has been available in the past. In an effort to do that, we examine what was allotted within a 10 year period, specifically in the years 1995 and 2005.
In fiscal year 1995, over $15 billion was spent on healthcare related issues. This amount included Medicaid payments, payments by other state insurance plans, funding for healthcare education-the training of doctors, nurses, and other allied health professionals, as well as, monies allotted to various hospitals, clinics, and mental health facilities. In fiscal year 2005, that total more than doubled—taking into account the continued rising cost of healthcare.
The situation in Missouri was a bit different. Before the arrival of Dr. Wilson, the Federal government played a limited role in healthcare in Missouri. It was his work and effort that changed the way the system worked. It was his work that paved the way for similar operations.
While some may consider it duty of the government to fund healthcare for the nation, it is the opinion of APHI that limited government interferences is in the best interest of the system and those it serves. The government is too divided, the structure to fragmented for any type of government funded program to work. Instead, it should be the responsibility of the individual states and their citizenry to fund healthcare in a particular region. This, along with private donations and grants should be the main cause of funding.
