According to the UN World Commission on Environment and Development, Sustainable development ‘seeks to meet the needs and aspirations of the present without compromising the ability to meet those of the future’ (Wells 2011). The sustainability development report is the initiative to research how the world is living in balance for the future. The reporting system works from a definition of sustainability that sees human activities as part of - and dependent upon - the natural world (The Sustainability Report 2004). Sanford Limited’s statement as put forward by the managing director Eric Barrat "Sustainable development is our business. NZ’s Quota Management System creates incentives to ensure sustainable management of our fisheries. The formation of the NZBCSD provides an opportunity for business to take leadership responsibility in promoting sustainable development." (Sanford Limited n.d.) The three main categories that ought to be covered in a sustainability development report are economic, environmental and social. Under the economic category the company needs to consider things like geographic breakdown of key markets, the taxes paid and also wages and salaries paid. Similarly under the environmental category total use of the material, direct energy use and consumption and green house gas emission need to be covered. And finally for the social aspect of the report they need to consider the contribution to employees’ social security beyond the compulsory requirements, possible deaths or accidents due to the nature of the job, management policies regarding the local people and contributions made to projects that will benefit the community as a whole (Business Guide to Sustainable Development Reporting 2002).
