2.1 DEFINITION OF PERCEPTION

Perception is a process by which individuals organise and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment (Catenacci 2010).

2.2 TYPE OF PERCEPTION ERROR OCCURRED

2.2.1 SELECTIVE PERCEPTION

Selective perception is the tendency to selectively interpret what one sees on the basic of one’s interests, background, experience and attitudes (Catenacci 2010). The other employees who believe the tattoo and pierced nose is bad and have negative impression on it will label the tattoo employees as a bad person before they ever know him.

2.2.2 HALO EFFECT

Halo effect occurs when we draw a general impression on the basic of a single characteristic such as intelligence, sociability or appearance (Catenacci 2010). When other employees see this newly staff has pierced nose and visible tattoo, they may judge the tattoo staff based on their first impression on him. They will say this tattoo staff is lazy, less educated, bad temper, low working performance, high absenteeism and high chance to turnover in future.

2.2.3 STEREOTYPING

Stereotyping is judging someone on the basis of our perception of group to which he or she belongs (Mazumdar 2006). The other employees who are stereotype on gangster will link this newly tattoo employee to gangster group because they think that the person who has tattoo and pierced nose is gangster, less educated and were in jail before.

2.3 SUGGESTION ON HOW MADAM MAY MAY DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE

Madam May May should communicate with tattoo employee and ask him to cover his tattoo by wearing long sleeves uniform shirts and long pants as well as put on makeup temporarily on his tattoos. Besides that, he also needs to remove his nose ring when he is working in the

office in order to respect the professional appearance of office.
