Answer each question in 50 to 150 words. Provide citations for all the sources you use.

1. What is diversity? Why is diversity valued?

Diversity is the characteristics that make individuals unique but there can be diversity in anything incuding trees, like a forest is very diverse with many tree species. There are many different characteristics some are age, culture, disability, economic background, education, ethnicity, gender, geographic background, language, race, political affiliation and many others.

2. What is ethnocentrism?

Ethnocentrism is a belief or someones point of view that one’s ethnicity is superior over any other. Entrnocentrism’s basic meaning means,s people’s self-centeredness meaning a person believes their point of view or believes is more correct than anothers. “Cultural Relavism” means the opposite of Ethnocentrism, meaning belief’s of other’s are exepted amoung other beliefs and cultures.

In what ways can ethnocentrism be detrimental to a society?

I believe that when we give into beliefs that our thoughts,culture, beliefs are superior to another’s, then we are at a point of cutting ourselves off from what could be a positive experience/relationship, that normally would lead to others respecting our own ideas. We can see the effect’s of ethnocentricm in a lot of middle eastern country’s where people are put to death for not believing in a religion or believing in a non-traditional religion.

3. Define emigration and immigration.

Emigration: This is when someone leaves the country of their origin.

Immigration: This means someone’s arrival and settling in a country in which they are not native.
