Unit VI Case Study

Kelvin L. Hamilton

Columbia Southern University

I found this case study very interesting in that based on the study data, that children as young as 4 years old were able to spend in the billions over the years up to $40BN by 2002 and this is before Ipads and smartphones flooded the markets so I can only imagine how much that amount has changed. I was rather astonished that children in this age range actually were given that much money overall to spend on their own, I didn’t get to do this until I was like 13 or so because my mother wanted to make sure of what I was getting was approved by her first.

As for advertising in schools, I believe that it should not be allowed due to the fact that in bypasses the parents and their efforts to protect their children from certain things. There are parents that do not let their children watch tv but a few hours a day and only certain channels or shows to protect them from what they perceive as potentially negative influences from television and advertisement. As a parent myself, I would want to know what my child is seeing at school prior to it being displayed. I believe a school district should inform parents of any advertising and only put it up in the school if they have majority consent from the parent group. Schools should only be allowed to advertise potential colleges, as was done when I was in high school many moons ago. The focus for any advertisement should only be focused on the scholastics lives of children and not the material. Schools should not allow any type of advertising that would promote beauty, electronics or clothing these things...
