Empowerment

Nurse’s hands must mold the future of nursing, and for the greater good of health care, change must begin, one by one, through empowering nurses. For nurses to become empowered Grossman and Valiga (2009), discuss this can occur several ways: by accountability, shared governance, knowledge, identifies self-limitations, involvement in professional organizations, and mentoring others (p. 167-168). The purpose of this paper is describe how empowering my organization is to nurses, from the Leadership Environment Assessment Survey, identify which “no” responses could be changed to “yes,” and, lastly, explain how becoming self empowered can change “no” responses to “yes.”

How Empowering the Organization is to Nurses

After completing the Leadership Environment Assessment Survey, Grossman and Valiga (2009, p.166), rating facilities empowerment of nurses, on a scale of one to four, it would rate a three. Overall, all organization promotes, reinforces and strengthens the development of leadership, and nurse empowerment. It endorses the qualities of emerging leaders, by recognizing the “strengths and talents of each member, finds ways to build on those strengths, expects group members to guide, encourage and support each other as they continue to grow” (p. 165.)

Identified Responses

Answers to the leadership survey developed from two perspectives. One, was reflecting upon the environment of the organization as a whole, and other, that of my team, a smaller culture. The area identified of concern arises from the organizational level, but affected the team. “No” response given to the question concerning questioning what, how and why things done, and to question asking if information shared. Our organization has been going through significant change, and decisions made affecting the work environment, and sometimes decisions made, which seemed questionable.
