The Truth about Autism

The word Autism was first defined in 1911 by Eugen Bleuler for patients who had schizophrenia, and would shy away from other people and who where self-absorbed. Autism has become a more popular disorder among child after 1943 when Leo Kanner a well known child psychiatrist discovered eleven cases of this mental disorder. The Center for Disease Control reported that 1 in every 500 children would have autism, and in other countries they say that 1 in every 150 children has autism. Kanner claimed that the autism was caused by mothers who lacked emotional warmth or frigid mothers. There was not treatment for children or adults that were diagnosed with autism, but between 1960 and 1970 the form of treatment was medications such as LSD, and even shock treatment. People say that children with autism cannot lead a normal life this may be true for some children but not all. Some of the myths that have been spread about autism are that they don’t have any feelings, they are a danger to society, and can’t speak. These myths may be true for some cases of autism, but autism people are capable of feelings, falling in love in their own way. An autistic person who has violent behaviors is caused by frustration which is from an overload of their sensors. It is not normal for autistic people to be violent just to be violent. There are non verbal and there are some that have a very large vocabulary and high reading skill.

Detection of autism is normally found within the first three years of the child’s life even though they may have autism from birth. First signs that your child may have autism are that they do not like to be held or keep eye contact, have no empathy toward people, talked to or even play simple games with other children.
