SOE and Operating System Software

SOE-

Standard Operating Environment:

* This is a term used in the IT industry to explain when an organization decides to create a disk image for all this computers.

This disk image will include the same Operating system and application software.

For example in our school we have a disk image for all out PC’s which includes Microsoft Windows 7 and software like Office and the Adobe Suite.

Advantage of an SOE:

1. Quicker to re-image machines which have software issues (i.e. viruses, deleted files)

Common look and feel makes it easier for staff to operate on different machines around the network.

2. Easier for IT department to troubleshoot issues with clients computers on the network.

3. Compatibility issues can be worked out on an organizational level rather than on each machine level.

What is an Operating System?

* An operating system is a set of programs containing instructions that work together to coordinate all the activities among the computer hardware. Specifically:

1. Configuring devices (organizing drivers)

2. Provide user interface

3. Managing programs

4. Coordinating tasks (i.e. organizing print jobs)

5. Monitoring performance of hardware

6. Establishing internet access

7. Providing security measures

Types of Operating Systems:

* Three categories of OS

1. Stand Alone – (i.e. Windows XP, Windows 7, Mac OSX, Linux). These are OS’s that work on a computer, notebook or laptop.

2. Server – This is an OS, which is designed to support a network. It is installed on the server. (I.e. Windows Server 2008, Netware, Novell, Linux)

3. Embedded – This resides on the ROM chip of mobile phone devices and other consumer electronics. (I.e. iPhone OS, Google Android, Blackberry, Symbian)

Advantages of Windows OS:

* Familiar with most people. They know how to operate it.

* More software is compatible with Windows OS

* Will run on all PC machines...
