Lab report :

1) the food combusted in this experiment is a piece of chips :

FV= 150 Kcal/28.3g = 5.3Kcal/g

FV= (5.3Kcal/g) x (4.19Kj/Kcal) = 22.19 Kj/g

2)

Trial | m (H2O)(g) | ΔT (K) | q (H20)(Kj) | mfood(g) | FVfood(Kj/g) | Percent error |

1 | 81,44 g | 277 K | 1.36Kj | 1.23g | 1.10Kj/g | -95% |

2 | 63.44 g | 285 K | 3.18Kj | 1.10g | 1.96Kj/g | -91% |

3 | 92.05 g | 282 K | 3.46Kj | 1.26g | 2.74Kj/g | -87% |

3) none of the variants was held constant during all trials.

4) to increase the efficiency of the experiment , I put a cover on the top of the can to prevent heat loss, so the heating was faster and the result was more accurate than the 1st .

5) the modification was effective because the fuel value in the 1st trial (1.10Kj/g was lower than the 2nd trial’s fuel value (1.96Kj/g)

6) to increase the efficiency of the experiment , I put a can on top of the heated can , that was done to prevent even more efficiently the heat loss . I have done this experiment in a very short time to have better results.

7) the modification was effective because the percentage error has decreased (from -95% to -87%)

8) we use a larger calorimeter, with greater volume of solution. reason; the greater the solvent mass requires more energy to obtain the same change in temperature. You get a smaller temp change for the same reaction, so less losses to the surroundings.
