Introduction

Kudler Fine Foods was founded by Kathy Kudler who loves to shop for and cook gourmet dishes. Kathy one day realized a need for an upscale food market in LA Jolla. She then came up with the plans to open in June 1998 and within two years she opened her second store in Del Mar and three years later her third store in Encinitas. Having an estimated 8,000 square foot for each location Kathy has brought to the San Diego area a wide range of bakery and pastry products, produce, meat and seafood, condiments and other packaged foods and a variety of cheese and specialty dairy products. In this paper we will discuss the strengths and weaknesses, how this store compete with others like it, the market structure and how it affects the firm, and what can be done to make this store stay competitive.

Competing in the market place

With so many stores trying to be the consumer’s top choice the competition is fierce. In the University of Phoenix simulation (2011), Kudler Fine Foods has the best bakery items and a sure fire way to make sure the customers are happy by having a satisfaction guarantee policy and if not satisfied the purchase is free. In the meat department there are special requests for orders that are rare such as dry aged beef, a variety of different poultry along with homemade sausage with not added preservatives. This department will handle all special meat requests no matter how odd. In the produce department if there is something that a customer wants that is not at the location Kudler’s will special order the item to accommodate the customer. Saturday mornings are for the cheese lovers to taste before they buy. This way they know what they want to purchase without being wasteful.
